Unlocking Meta’s hidden settings: the tweaks every advertiser should know

By Emily Hopkins, Digital Marketing Manager

Meta’s AI does a brilliant job powering modern ad campaigns, but sometimes it can feel like it’s making decisions a little too independently. While automation remains the smart path forward, there are still a few places where human input can fine-tune and elevate results. These hidden settings won’t replace AI — but they can support it and give your campaigns that extra edge.

  1. Smart ad timing

Running ads while your audience is fast asleep isn’t the best use of budget — unless your customer base consists of nocturnal impulse buyers. Using Meta’s ad scheduling, you can run ads only when your audience is active, increase spend during key hours, and improve lead quality by aligning spend with times you can respond quickly. You’ll find these options in the Budget Strategy section at the ad set level.

  1. Combine your social proof

Hidden in Meta’s tools and advertising settings is a simple yet effective checkbox: “Combine likes and reactions.” Once enabled, engagement from similar ads is merged, giving your ads stronger social proof, better performance momentum, and instantly more credibility. It’s a small switch with a big impact.

  1. Make use of value rules

Some customers deliver more value than others, and Meta gives you the chance to take advantage of that. Value Rules let you prioritise people who are more valuable to your business — whether that’s repeat purchasers, high-retention demographics, or device users who convert better. Boost your bid for these audiences to help Meta focus your ads where it counts. You’ll find this option under Conversions at the ad set level.

  1. Targeting override: going back to basics

Meta really wants you to trust its AI-driven targeting. But sometimes the algorithm decides to get creative. Under Audience settings, you’ll find the option to “Further limit the reach of your ads,” which takes you back to traditional targeting controls. This is useful when your ads are being delivered to the wrong people or when you need tighter relevance. Just make sure to uncheck the “Use as suggestion” box so Meta doesn’t quietly override your choices.

  1. Choose your placements wisely

Automatic placements are usually the right call for conversion-focused campaigns, but not always ideal for traffic or awareness campaigns. In these cases, manually removing Audience Network can improve quality, since it often delivers cheap clicks without much real engagement. Head to Placements, switch to manual, and keep only the placements that support your objective.

  1. Personalised text variations

“Optimise Text Per Person” allows Meta to mix and match your headlines, primary text, and descriptions to create the best combination for each individual viewer. It’s a quick way to boost relevance and test variations at scale. The downside: if your brand guidelines are strict, Meta may serve combinations that feel off-brand, like two headlines or overly long copy. You’ll see this option when creating text variations.

  1. Automated rules

For anyone juggling multiple campaigns, Automated Rules are a lifesaver. Located under the More dropdown, they allow you to automatically increase budgets, lower spend when performance dips, pause poor performers, or maintain pacing without constant manual adjustments. Think of it as having a built-in campaign assistant who never sleeps and never panics.

Ready to level up your Meta ads?

Meta’s hidden settings might not be glamorous, but they’re powerful. Whether you’re chasing efficiency, stronger performance, or just a little more control, these switches can help you steer your strategy more confidently — even in an AI-first landscape.
